‘Everyone has the capacity to make art. You just have to find your medium,’ commented Kyle Hughes, one of fifteen young people taking part in Young Communicators Yarmouth (YCY), who spent a day with me at the National Centre for Writing this month.
YCY is a new Arts Council funded initiative, giving young people in and around Great Yarmouth hands on experience in cultural reporting, as part of broader project Creative Collisions. I’m working with the group as a writing trainer and mentor, helping them gain hands on experience in creative opinion writing. for their blog – coming soon.
Together with the group, we talked all things art and culture. Mostly, as the first step to being able to write on art, is having an opinion on it! We also looked at art writing online. Debated what art is. And isn’t. What it’s for. What it does. We researched St George’s Theatre’s upcoming Wizard of Oz production, which will be one of the group’s assignments, plus looked at New Geographies, public art in Great Yarmouth. Creative Collisions itself is a project to inspire creativity in young people and grow awareness of career paths in the creative industries. As part of Young Communicators Yarmouth, the group will be writing their own assignments on cultural activity in Great Yarmouth, up until Spring 2019. Watch out for their blog posts coming soon!
