This month I’m working as a writer with Great Yarmouth’s Time and Tide Museum to help children improve literacy through exploring The Titanic, with the ‘Art of Journalism’.
Researching history through a combination of theatre, costume props at the museum visit, the children are creating their own stories to go into a newspaper, The Titanic Times – sourcing quotes, investigating life on The Titanic for crew and passengers.
From learning to waltz, how to lay a table in First Class, to having a go at deciphering Morse Code – the visit to the Museum is a brilliant way to inspire excitement and gain material to write about.
A chilling and poignant chapter in maritime heritage, the project is also a useful way to explore the role of the press in reporting on major events.
All children will receive a certificate as part of my literacy resources upon completing their stories.
