I have a new poem published in the anthology, ‘Persephone Wakes’, written in response to climate emergency, in a new anthology of marine fiction from Norfolk, ‘Like The Sea I Think’. It launches in the Book Hive, Norwich, May 28th 6pm.
Persephone was the goddess of Spring and according to ancient myth, was kidnapped by Hades, god of the Underworld, causing her mother Demeter, to grieve, the trees to lose their leaves and Winter to fall. In ‘Persephone Wakes’, the myth is subverted.
Inspired by the art of Elisabeth Frink and the writing of environmental scientist Rachel Carson, referencing worldwide activism – the poem is part quest, part invitation to wake from those patriarchal principles that undermine the concept that the ‘the mother’, our world (mater/matter), is sacred.
This is a revised version of a long narrative prose poem, developed in response to the UN reports on climate change while studying creative writing at Cambridge University, plus marine writing with Sarah Lowndes.
