Ground Up Writing Workshop – Exploring Community / Space

By | 21st May 2020

I’m running a writing workshop with Norfolk Arts Trust today helping young writers respond to a newly commissioned virtual art space, inspired by The Undercroft in Norwich.

We are writing in response to ‘community’ and ‘space’, for the exhibition showcasing art from young people across Norfolk – curated by the Young Norfolk Arts Collective.

There’s an open call to submit work to the show, which is open to young people aged 11 – 25 that closes on June 22nd.

Community Action!

A recent response to the pandemic has been a groundswell of kindness and community initiatives giving help to people who need it. This activity is to find a volunteer who is helping in their community, interview them and build a story around it. Below is a photo of Libby, of The Way of Tea, who is making masks for carers, teachers, volunteers, ‘shielders’ and residents who need them together with volunteers from Norwich and in Norfolk. They’ve made around 300 masks and would love you to get involved to help! https://thewayoftea.co.uk/making-an-easy-diy-face-mask-a-pattern-by-the-way-of-tea/

Note down what examples do you have had, or seen of kindness in the community. Why is it important to write about them?

Talk to a volunteer and interview them to find out some quotes for your inspiring story. Start your short piece with a quote on community – or a part of the interview that you think is engaging. What is inspiring about what they are doing? Plus offer links to help people support, or get involved.
